charge halted by lowly Tutbury Matlock
C.C 1st XI 175 All Out (6 points) After the elation of a thoroughly professional performance against league leaders Elvaston the previous week, it was difficult to witness the ineffectual display by Matlock against bottom of the league Tutbury at Causeway Lane on Saturday. Whether it was an anti-climax to the Elvaston game or a large dose of complacency is a mystery, but the home side's performance was well below what is expected of them, as they were outplayed for most of the game. Matlock won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first and an opening stand of 65 between D. Yeomans (36) and S. Wesson (19) set the scene for what was to follow. D. Green (43), C. Watson (28), R. Ellerington (24 not out) and B. Bartram (18 not out) all scored freely and if not always pretty, it was very effective on the day, as they reached an improbable 219 for 6 from their 50 overs. For only the second time this season the usually reliable Matlock bowlers did not come to the party, with only Gareth Johnson returning respectable figures of 2 for 34 from 10 overs, with the other wicket takers being Christoff Visser (2 for 64), George Moulds (1 for 43) and Eddie Lowe (1 for 32). Having scored 219 the visitor's spirits were justifiably high and their cause was helped considerably by some poor, and at times, irresponsible batting by Matlock. Visser was unfortunate to be given out to a debatable umpiring decision for 26 and Andy Rogers and Adam Burton batted well for 39 and 25 respectively, but Moulds (14), Steve Pell (13) and Eddie Lowe (14) surrendered their wickets through poor shot selection against some very ordinary Tutbury bowling. No-one in the Matlock batting line-up was prepared to dig deep and go on to the big innings that was so desperately needed and consequently they were bowled out for just 175 runs in 43 overs. Of the 7 bowers used by the visitors D. Yeomans (4 for 16), B. Bartram (2 for 42), S. Wesson (1 for 16), K Hussain (1 for 23), A Thompson (1 for 26) and M. Edgerton (1 for 29) all enjoyed themselves as they bowled their side to a third consecutive win and the resulting 27 points. With this defeat Matlock drop one place to third in the league and if they are to mount a serious challenge for promotion, a greater degree of discipline and hard work is needed for the final 5 games of the season. Perhaps today's result will give them this when they visit Stainsby Hall next week.
