Season ends in defeat
Sunday, 13 September, 2009

Matlock C.C 1st XI 214 All Out (8 points)
Ticknall C.C 1st XI 312 for 8 (27 points)

It was a pity the euphoria and sheer elation of the previous day's win against Denby to secure promotion to the Premier League, was tainted by an inept and below par performance in the final game of the season against Ticknall at Causeway Lane on Sunday.

With nothing more for either team to play for other than pride, it was the visitors who came with the greater desire, and this was particularly disappointing as the home team were very much on display as candidates for the Premier League in 2010.

On what was probably the best wicket seen at Causeway Lane all season, the visitors were asked to bat first and after a watchful start the soon began to smack the ball to all areas of the ground. Shahid Khan scored an aggressive 81 and together with a more solid 75 from Luke Harvey, they had racked up a score of 167 for 2 at only the half way stage of their innings. Rupert Scott-Jones (36), Jonathan Thompstone (35), Jack Lamb (21 not out) and Zak Lucas (19) all kept the momentum going as they reached a formidable 312 for 8 at the end of their 50 overs.

Pick of the bowlers for Matlock from purely an economical perspective were once again Adam Burton (2 for 55) and Christoff Visser (2 for 52). Gareth Johnson did take 3 good wickets albeit a little on the expensive side conceding 77 runs in the process, but the rest of the bowling was disappointing on the day.

There is little to be said for the Matlock reply and apart from .Man of the Match. Derek Randall who scored a polished 49 and was unlucky not to get his 50, no-one else even looked like getting to 30 as they were bowled out for 214 in 48 overs. Caleb Mierkalns (26), Mark Burton (21 not out), Adam Burton (18), George Moulds (16) and Steve Pell (13) were the scorers but it was all too insignificant in the context of the game. For the visitors Zac Lucas (4 for 67), Jack Lamb (2 for 17) and Eddie Ikin (2 for 32) all enjoyed themselves in bowling their team to 27 points.

Today's performance apart, we must take nothing away from an incredible performance by Matlock this season and as the hard work now begins in preparations for that important 2010 season, we congratulate Steve Pell and his team on their achievements in 2009.
