Failure to compete costs Matlock

Ticknall C.C 1st XI 177 for 9
Matlock C.C 1st XI 173 all out

Having lost to Ticknall the previous week in the quarter final of the Marstons Cup at Causeway Lane, Matlock visited Ticknall in a league match last Saturday and it was hardly surprising when losing the toss that they were asked to bat first.

With Caleb Mierkalns absent through work, it was not long before Shahid Khan was exposing the frailties in the Matlock batting, with only opener Christoff Visser of the top order making any impression as he scored a good 33. It was however left to the bowlers Adam Burton (29) and Gareth Johnson (14), together with Martin Leatherday batting at number 10 who made a good 24 and shared in a last wicket stand of 34 with Eddie Lander, to rescue the situation and help Matlock to a total of 173 in 48 overs. Khan finished with 4 for 32 ably assisted by Z. Lucas (2 for 11) and A. Woodburn (2 for 50). Ticknall made a cautious start to their innings before Bridgeman had his leg stump removed by Adam Burton and L. Harvey fell LBW to the same bowler with the score on 30, before rain interrupted play.

On resumption Ticknall started to climb into the driving seat with a stand of 89 between R. Scott-Jones (46) and S. Khan (48). This was until 18 year old Eddie Lander was introduced into the attack, were he produced a superb spell of bowling to claim 3 for 6 in only 6 overs and bowled in tandem with Visser to reduce the home side to 156 for 9.

Matlock were suddenly in touching distance of claiming an unlikely 27 points and maybe felt they should have been going home with all the points as they had two very good caught behind appeals turned down by the umpires.

The final wicket remained elusive and it was Ticknall that claimed the victory with a couple of overs to spare. Christoff Visser (3 for 52), Adam Burton (2 for 47) and Gareth Johnson (1 for 31) provided the fight back for Matlock.

The Matlock players will know that their overall performance in this match wasn't good enough as for three quarters of this game they didn't compete. Captain Steve Pell will be looking for a much improved performance from his team next Saturday when they travel to Swarkestone.
