Doyle shines in convincing win
29 May, 2010
Matlock C.C 1st XI 112 for 2 (22 points)
Elvaston C.C 1st XI 108 all out (1 point))

There is nothing more frustrating for cricketers, umpires, scores and spectators, than to be waiting around for the rain to subside, but this was the case at Causeway Lane on Saturday until, after an early tea was taken, at around 4pm the covers were removed, the captains and umpires declared it fit and the game commenced.

Steve Pell won the toss and invited Elvaston to bat first and fortunately for Matlock very little more rain fell and the game was played to a very satisfying conclusion. With the game reduced to 27 overs per side it was important for Matlock to get off to a good start, this they did as Australian Mark Doyle removed Dan Randle with the very first ball of the innings and had it not been for a blistering clean hitting 47 runs in only 20 balls from Charlie Ault, they would have suffered acute embarrassment as they had no answer to Matlock's pace attack.

Doyle (5 for 35) and Peter Camm (3 for 22) were magnificent and with Eddie Lowe chipping in with 2 for 3 at the end, they shot a demoralised Elvaston out for only 108 runs in just 21 overs. Apart from Ault only Lee Archer (16) and Nick Briars (12) offered any kind of resistance.

With the hosts needing just 109 to win and with 33 overs in which to get them, Elvaston were looking for divine intervention from the sky, but all to no avail as Matlock cantered to their target with only 2 wickets down and with 17 overs to spare.

The situation suited Kevin Leatherday (33 not out) who was happy to play the anchor role, As Mark Doyle played a powerful and commanding innings of 59 including eight 4s and four 6s and together with 13 not out from Mattew Cluer they took Matlock to a comfortable and very welcome 22 points victory.

This was a much improved all-round performance from Matlock, where the fielding performance was sharper and more determined than of late and that the batting was at last showing the right signs. Let us hope this continues when Spondon are the visitors to Causeway Lane next Saturday for a 1pm start.

Doyle dominates for Matlock
29 May, 2010

Another rain interrupted game allowed Matlock to gain 22 points against Elvaston this weekend. Matlock bowled Elvaston out in the reduced 27 overs match. The side made 108 with Charlie Ault hitting a significant 47, Matlock's attack was lead by Mark Doyle who contributed with the ball taking 5 wickets for 35 runs and he was assisted by Peter Camm who took 3-22. The response saw Matlock reach their total with 112-2 in just 15.3 overs. It was man of the match Doyle who dominated the match as he hit 59 leaving Kevin Leatherday to complete the win with 33 not out, which resulted in Elvaston gaining just a point. 3 M Doyle 2 C Ault 1 K Leatherday.
