Excellent run comes to an end
26 June, 2010

Ockbrook & Borrowash 178 for 4 22 points)
Matlock XI 176 all out (5 points)

Matlock's excellent and decent run finally came to an end when they visited league leaders Ockbrook & Borrowash on Saturday and such is the strength of their team, containing several ex-Derbyshire players, that Matlock knew this was going to be a stiff task.

Captin Steve Pell lost the toss and was invited to bat first and through Matlock's innings wickets fell at regular intervals, with only two worthwhile stands of any note. The first was a third wicket standard of 44 between Mark Doyle (36) and top scorer in the match Matt Cluer (40), the second being a ninth wicket stand of 40 between an injured Steve Pell (22) and Nick Rosling (29 not out).

The least said about the rest of the battling the better, as no-one else came remotely near scoring double figures and they were dismissed for a total of 176, which proved to be around 70 runs short where they needed to be.

For the home side Liam Wharton (3 for 38), Garth Young (2 for 24), Steve Attenborough (2 for 31), Miles Hayhurst (1 for 10) and Trevor Smith (1 for 32) looked a very useful bowling attack and this was without two of their regular bowlers Kevin Dean and Jake Needham.

The Ockbrook reply started well, with Johnnie Guthrie (34) and Matt Cassaar (26) putting on 54 for the first wickets before Eddie Lowe sent Cassar's bails flying and then had Guthrie well caught by Matt Cluer in the slips to give Matlock a glimmer of hope with the home side on 65 for 2.

Sadly for Matlock, however, the wickets dried up as a third wicket stand of 47 between Dave Hallack (21) and Trevor Smith (24) began to take the game away from Matlock before it was finally left to George Morgan (34 not out) and Garth Young (23 not out) to take the home side to a comfortable six wicket victory.

For Matlock Eddie Lowe was thier best bowler on show as he finished with 2 for 25 from nine very good overs, with the other wicket-takers being Pete Camm (1 for 46) and Minesh Keshwala (1 for 31).

This could have been better for Matlock had it not been for some sloppy fielding and dropped catches which is perhaps something for them to concentrate on in training ahead of the next game at Causeway Lane against Lullington Park on Saturday. Take nothing away from Matlock, to go ten games before experiencing defeat at this level is no mean achievement and all credit must go to Steve Pell and his squad for putting the name of Matlock well and truly on the cricketing map.
