League
campaign underway with victory A thoroughly focussed all-round team performance saw Matlock open their Premier League season with a resounding victory over Quarndon at The Common on Saturday. Matlock won the toss and skipper Steve Pell's decision to bowl first was fully justified when, after only 21 overs Quarndon had been reduced to 60 for the loss of 6 wickets. One major difference however between the County League and Premier League is that teams at this level have capable batsmen right down to number eleven and this was ably demonstrated in a 7th wicket partnership of 42 between Robin Williamson (39) and Adam Street (26) that threatened to relax Matlock's grip on the game. Fortunately for Matlock this did not happen as they exerted extra pressure to bowl Quarndon out for just 144 in 45 overs. For Matlock Peter Camm bowled magnificently with both pace and rhythm and he was rewarded with taking 6 for 40 in 12 overs. The support bowling was also very good on the day as Eddie Lowe (2 for 30), Mark Doyle (1 for 22) and Adam Burton (1 for 43) all contributed to a clinical performance. The Matlock reply started with somewhat of a wobble as Caleb Mierkalns, Kevin Leatherday and Andy Rogers found themselves back in the pavilion with just 53 runs on the board, of which Mierkalns made 18. Enter Matt Cluer who proceeded to give a master class in batting as he scored an impressive 67 not out, including 11 fours and a six to steer Matlock to a deserved victory. Cluer found an able partner in Peter Camm as they added 89 runs for the fourth wicket, with Camm scoring 33 to round off a very good day for himself. The successful bowlers for Quarndon were Matt Dowman (2 for 24), Sam Van Daes Donk (1 for 25) and Adam Street (1 for 53). This was a very good morale boosting win for Matlock and one that makes the future in the Premier League seem just a little bit more reassuring, but having said that there is still a long way to go this season, but if they approach each game in the way they did today they can make the season easier and more enjoyable for themselves. Next week Matlock have a double-header both at Causeway Lane as they take on Chesterfield in the league on Saturday and in the Derbyshire Cup on Sunday both with a 1pm start.
