Poor batting costs Matlock victory
22 May, 2010
lkeston Rutland C.C 1st XI 203 for 8 (17 points)
Matlock C.C 1st XI 154 for 8 (9 points)

Once again it was Groundhog Day for Matlock as they were left to bat out for a draw in a game that they could and should have won.

Batting is definitely a problem at the moment and where as the bowlers are doing good work in restricting the opposition scoring the batsmen are under achieving there by reducing the real chance of turning draws into victories.

On a good wicket albeit a little slow, the hosts made a very steady start against some good Matlock bowling, putting on 41 for the first wicket before DerbyshireÕs Chesney Hughes was caught by wicketkeeper Harvey Hosein off the bowling of Eddie Lowe for 23.

The other opener Nick Dawson went onto make a solid 59 when he was sixth man out with the score on 116 and it was here that Matlock needed to exert their advantage. Unfortunately for them Ian Banks (32), Andy Flindall (39 not out) and Rob Green (17 not out) all stayed around long enough to thwart the visitors, as they reached a modest 203 for 8 from their allocated 50 overs.

Pick of the bowlers for Matlock was Eddie Lowe (2 for 23) and the other successes were Minesh Keshwala (2 for 32), Peter Camm (2 for 44), Adam Burton (1 for 38) and Mark Doyle (1 for 63).

Wicketkeeper Hosein was again impressive and his second catch to dismiss David Smit was exceptional.

In an effort to find a formula that would get Matlock off to a good start, skipper Steve Pell (29) promoted himself and Australian Mark Doyle (66) into the top 3 and it worked well as they found themselves on 101 for 1 after 26 overs and well on course for victory.

Sadly though when the pair were out only Nick Rosling (21 not out) displayed any real resistance, as six batsmen could only muster 26 runs between them, to leave Matlock batting to save the match at 154 for 8 in 50 overs.

For Ilkeston Rob Green (3 for 21), Ian Banks (3 for 32) and Chesney Hughes (1 for 50) were the successful bowlers.

• Next week Elvaston are the visitors to Causeway Lane for a 1pm start.

Leatherday hits 82 not out
15 May, 2010

Matlock did well to prevent Sandiacre Town the win this weekend. The visitors Sandiacre only gained 17 points from a winning draw. The side made 213-5 with Rob Atwood playing a well constructed innings of 82 not out, assisted by John Trueman who hit a solid 51. In their response, Matlock could only make 187 runs loosing 8 wickets in their 50 overs. A man of the match performance from Kevin Leatherday saw another unbeaten 82, whilst SandiacreÕs Lloyd Hobson finished with figures of 3-33 to restrict Matlock to 8 points.
