Losing draw means final day drama 1st XI suffer final day heartache Lullington
Park C.C 1st XI 200 for 7 (27 points) There were scenes of great jubilation as the champagne corks popped at Lullington on Sunday night, but it was only to celebrate the home side winning the Premier League for the first time in their history, as they had defeated and relegated an abject Matlock side back down to Division One. The home side were asked to bat first and were kept very quiet for most of their innings, with only Sam Eaton (33) and John Shales (28) with double-figure scores as they stood at 114 for 6 after 39 overs. It was then that Rudi Hillerman (35), Alan Gough (53 not out) and George Chapman (15 not out) cut loose to take them to an unlikely 200 for 7 at the end of their innings. For most of the innings the Matlock bowlers were on top with Eddie Lowe (3 for 51), Peter Camm (2 for 51) and Nick Rosling (2 for 29) bowling a good line, but when the pressure was on at the end, inevitably the bowling figures suffered. Faced with scoring 201 to win which was well within their capabilities and as Caleb Mierkalns (32) and Kevin Leatherday (28) had given them a firm base with an opening stand of 48, it promised to be an interesting game. Sadly it was then that a display of tentative batting, poor shot selection and poor running between wickets condemned them to an all out score of only 121. Only Jonathan Stapleton (16 not out) batting number nine produced some positive shots, but there was no-one capable of staying with him for support. For the home side it was George Chapman (4 for 16) who was the main destroyer, and he was ably supported by Alan Gough (2 for 15), Matt Sanderson (1 for 14) and Paul Dawson (1 for 26). The first taste of Premier League cricket for Matlock has been both hard and very enjoyable and it is now up to the Club to develop and recruit a team capable of returning to this level as quickly and possible, and to uphold the standard that has proudly been achieved. 11
September, 2010 Losing draw means final day drama Matlock
C.C 1st XI 83 for 6 (5 points) Rain and wet conditions delayed the start of Matlock's difficult game against high-flying Ockbrook & Borrowash at the County Ground at Derby on Saturday. When play finally got underway at 3.45pm, and the game reduced to 25 over per side, it was Ockbrook who batted first and with Matt Cassar (94) and Jonathan Guthrie (37) putting on 118 runs for the first wicket, a target of 200plus seemed well within their reach. The introduction of Nick Rosling into the attack slowed the run-rate down significantly as he picked up 2 for 30 and with skipper Mark Doyle finishing with 4 for 50 plus a economical spell from Adam Burton, Ockbrook were restricted to 174 for 8 from their 25 overs. Any thoughts Matlock had of reaching their target were soon dispelled, as against a bowling attack containing three ex-Derbyshire players and one present they found life somewhat difficult, finishing on just 83 for 6 at the end of their 25 overs. Peter Camm (22) was the only batsman to display any aggression and together with Caleb Mierkalns (19) and Mark Doyle (16), there were the only double figure contributions. Kevin Dean (3 for 21), Jake Needham (2 for 18) and Liam Wharton (1 for 31) all bowled tightly to put the brakes on a frustrated Matlock batting line up. This result keeps Matlock in third bottom position and their Premier League survival depends very much on the results of their final game tomorrow (Sunday) when the visit league leaders Lullington Park.
