Professional performance rewarded with 22 points
24 July, 2010

Matlock 1st XI 199 for 3 (22 points)
Alvaston & Boulton 1st XI 197 for 9 (4 points)

Matlock turned in an excellent performance on Saturday when they defeated a strong Alvaston & Boulton side in a very professional and competent manner and in so doing helped themselves to a welcome and thoroughly deserved 22 points.

Batting first the signs were ominous for the visitors from the very first over of the game, when Peter Camm had Steve Stubbings caught by Eddie Lowe at slip without a run on the board and although Chris McIlroy (37), Lance MacKenzie (41) and Hasan Adnan (44) stayed around, they were well marshalled by a disciplined Matlock bowling attack.

A patient 22 not out from David Lewis was the only other score of note as they stuttered to a total of 197 for 9 from their 50 overs. In a much more controlled bowling display by the home side, it was Mark Doyle (3 for 41) who again impressed, but Nick Rosling, in only his 2nd bowl for the team, kept a tight line to take 3 for 45 from 13 very good overs and exert pressure on the visitors, and with Peter Camm (1 for 34) and Adam Burton (1 for 36) it was a job well done for Matlock.

A few eyebrows were raised as MatlockÕs new opening partnership of Caleb Mierkalns and Minesh Keshwala emerge but it was an astute judgment by skipper Mark Doyle in remembering MierkalnsÕs liking for the Alvaston & Boulton attack earlier in the season, that proved correct. Mierkalns (58) and Keshwala (20) got Matlock off to a good start with Mierkalns remorseless against anything remotely short of length and line as they put on 70 for the first wicket before Keshwala was caught.

Kevin Leatherday (23) then joined Mierkalns to take the score to 100 when Mierkalns miss-timed a skier to be caught, before Leatherday was LBW with the score on 130 for 3.

Any thoughts A&B had of creating a further breakthrough were soon dismissed as a controlled and powerful 47 not out from Doyle, assisted by Matt Cluer (12 not out) took Matlock to victory in only 35 overs. Apart from Andy Gray 1 for 28 in 10 overs, the rest of visitors bowling were punished severely with Steve Ottewell (1 for 57) and Oli Saffell (1 for 68) the only wicket takers and the fact that 35 wides were conceded was a cause of consternation for their skipper Steve Stubbings.

This win takes Matlock up one place to 6th in the Premier League as they look forward to a double-header next week when they visit Sandiacre next Saturday for a 1.30pm start and visit Alfreton on Sunday for a 1pm start.

Matlock put space and the drop zone

Matlock put some much-needed space between themselves and the drop zone with victory over strugglers Alvaston & Boulton. Mark Doyle (3-41) and Nick Rosling (3-45) were a constant threat but A & B managed to post a respectable 197 for 9 thanks to runs from Lee MacKenzie (41), Chris McIlroy (37) and Hassan Adnan (44).

It was plain sailing for Matlock after the break, however, with Caleb Mierkalns (58) and Doyle (47no) in complete control. Victory by seven wickets came in just 35 overs with Man-of-the-Match Doyle unbeaten at the close.
