Matlock innings: K Leatherday 128*, M Doyle 113 High
scoring game ends in draw In whatever sport is being contested, there is always friendly rivalry between these two clubs and non-more so than in this very first Premier League meeting between the two where, in a nail-biting finish to a game that was a credit to the Premier League, Matlock just managed to take the lion's share of the points in a close drawn game. Matlock's ability to grind out results when batting second is indisputable, but today they were invited to bat first where they put on a display to silence their most hardened critics and prove to themselves that they can rise to the occasion. After losing the customary early wicket a second wicket stand of 194 between Kevin Leatherday (128 not out) and Australian Mark Doyle (113) was quite outstanding as they took the score beyond 200 in scintillating style before Doyle was adjudged LBW. Leatherday was then joined by Matt Cluer (18) in another substantial stand of 74 for the third wicket as they finished their innings on 280 for 3. Of the six Alfreton bowlers used John Aspinall (1 for 47), Tom Young (1 for 74) and Matt Lineker (1 for 75) were all relieved when the tea interval arrived. On a batsmen friendly wicket the home-side bowlers knew they had to bowl well to contain a strong Alfreton line-up and so it proved. After a sedate start of 75 from 22 overs for the first wicket, the visitors accelerated through Matt Lineker (41), Tom Bentley (41), Will Challinor (38), Alex Mace (37), Andrew Gwatkin (37) and John Aspinall (26) as they pushed Matlock to very edge in a most exciting and absorbing finish. Matlock used only four bowlers and it was the economical bowling of Mark Doyle and Adam Burton (2 for 46) that was to be applauded. Matlock's leading wicket-taker by far this season is Peter Camm who again took 4 wickets with Eddie Lowe taking the other wicket to fall, but neither bowler will want to be reminded that they were at a cost of 107 and 50 runs respectively. One minor blemish in an otherwise superb display of cricket, was the dropped catches by Matlock at a crucial stage late in the game that perhaps denied them another point, but that apart this was a highly competitive game between two very good sides. A stern test awaits Matlock next week as they visit league leaders Ockbrook and Borrowash when the league's only two unbeaten teams meet for a 1.30pm start. Short report below by Derbyshire Premier & County Cricket Leagues, on the Play-Cricket web site. Leatherday
and doyle lead the way Matlock took 16 points from their meeting with Alfreton this weekend. The hosts Matlock hit 280-3 from their 50 overs, with two dominant performances from Kevin Leatherday who hit a superb 128 not out and Mark Doyle who made 113. In response, Alfreton reached 270-7 with contributions throughout the order as Matt Linekar hit 41, Tom Bentley also made 41, Will Challenor hit 38, and Andrew Gwatkin added 37 and Alex Mace also contributed with 37. MatlockÕs Peter Camm finished with figures of 4-107, expensive however; his side got the winning draw leaving Alfreton with 10 points. 3 K Leatherday 2 M Doyle 1 T Bentley.
