Leatherday
thwarts Sandiacre For the first time in many years Nottinghamshire club Sandiacre Town were the visitors to Causeway Lane and in a game that promised to be tough for the home side, was anything but as only 26 runs separated the teams at the end of a competitive drawn game. Batting first the visitors made a steady and watchful start against some tight Matlock bowling, as they reached 39 without loss, but then 3 wickets fell at the same score as Australian Mark Doyle dismissed James Chapman and David Jordison and Adam Burton had the dangerous Anthony Woolley caught for 23. From here the visitors needed something special and it came in a 5th wicket stand of a 125 as John Trueman (51) and Rob Attwood set about repairing the damage. A brisk 15 from Lloyd Hobson, together with a patient but well compiled 82 not out from Attwood enable Sandiacre to a final total of 213 for 5, a score well below their expectations. Restricting the visitors to this score was no mean achievement and Doyle (2 for 69), Burton (1 for 43), Eddie Lowe (1 for 21) and Peter Camm (1 for 39) all stuck to their tasks well, although it has to be said that the fielding was well below that expected of this youthful Matlock team. The Matlock reply got off to a good start as Caleb Mierkalns and Kevin Leatherday figured in an opening stand of 34 before Mierkalns was trapped LBW for 21. Mark Doyle (15) apart, the rest of the middle order was almost nonexistent as it was left to Leatherday to defy a good visiting bowling attack single handed, as he batted through the 50 overs to finish with 82 not out and take Matlock to within 26 runs of victory. This was Leatherday back to his old form and how he must have been wishing that one other batsman could have stayed around long enough to complete the victory he so richly deserved. Having said that he did receive very good rearguard support from Minesh Keshwala and Adam Burton in batting out for the draw. The Sandiacre bowling attack must rate as one of the best in the league and it was their South African spinner Lloyd Hobson (3 for 33) together with seamers John Jordison (2 for 27) and Dan Wheeldon (2 for 48) that gave the home side problems. Next week Matlock travel to take on Ilkeston Rutland in a 1pm start. Short report by Derbyshire Premier & County Cricket Leagues, on the Play-Cricket web site. Leatherday
hits 82 not out Matlock did well to prevent Sandiacre Town the win this weekend. The visitors Sandiacre only gained 17 points from a winning draw. The side made 213-5 with Rob Atwood playing a well constructed innings of 82 not out, assisted by John Trueman who hit a solid 51. In their response, Matlock could only make 187 runs loosing 8 wickets in their 50 overs. A man of the match performance from Kevin Leatherday saw another unbeaten 82, whilst SandiacreÕs Lloyd Hobson finished with figures of 3-33 to restrict Matlock to 8 points.
