1st XI defy Alvaston & Boulton
8 May, 2010
Alvaston & Boulton C.C 1st XI 282 for 4 (20 points)
Matlock C.C 1st XI 203 for 9 (7 points)

Matlock travelled to Derby to play a much-fancied Alvaston & Boulton side containing three ex-county players of recent times.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat on a good wicket and they must have been surprised to be 2 wickets down for only 21 runs, Steve Stubbings was however batting well until he was the 3rd man out LBW to Peter Camm for 47 with the score on 99.

This brought together Hasan Adnan and Ben Perry-Taylor and in an excellent stand of 166 for the 4th wicket, it was into the 49th over before Matlock claimed the wicket of Perry-Taylor for a well made 70, leaving Adnan on 135 not out including a six and 18 fours to reach 282 for 4 at the end of 50 overs.

For Matlock the bowlers toiled on a cold and uninspiring day when rewards were sparse and it was Adam Burton (2 for 62) and Peter Camm (2 for 76) who shared the wickets to fall.

Credit must go to 13 year old wicket-keeper Harvey Hosein when in a large score only two byes were conceded in an immaculate performance for one so young.

When Matlock's top order batsmen get them off to a good start it will be the first time this season and today was no exception, as four of the top six failed leaving a mountain to climb for the rest.

Opener Caleb Mierkalns did however find his form in scoring 65 out of a total of 82 in the typical Mierklans way and with another impressive 38 from Matt Cluer, it could and should have been so different.

With the top order back in the pavilion it was left to number 7 batsman Jonathan Stapleton to apply resolute determination in defying the A&B attack for a total of 28 overs to save the day for Matlock as he finished with 41 not out.

Stapleton did receive good support from a rapidly improving Ed Lander as together they used up 10 valuable overs to deny the home side the breakthrough.

For A&B the most successful bowler was Steve Ottewell (5 for 74) with Andy Gray (2 for 30) and Nigel Mallender (2 for 32) restricting Matlock to 203 for 9 after their 50 overs.

• Matlock are in the middle of a trio of difficult games as next weeks visitors to Causeway Lane are high flying Sandiacre Town who are again being tipped for honours this season. Start time will be 1pm.ΚΚΚ .
