Matlock C.C 1st XI 216 for 6 (22 points)
Spondon C.C 1st XI 215 all out (7 points)

With Causeway Lane bathed in warm sunshine, a good crowd were treated to an excellent game of cricket as Matlock, charged with chasing down 216 runs to win, made it in fine style with 6 wickets down and 1 ball to spare to take 22 points and leave Spondon with just 7 points.

Throughout the afternoon this game was like a clock pendulum, swinging first one way and then the other and it was fitting that it should culminate in such an exciting way.

Batting first the visitors were indebted to Joe Ashdown (53), Oli Baum (40), Joe Kellogg (38) and Dave Tainton (35) in their all out total of 215, but from a position of 198 for 5 with 10 overs left they should have been looking at a score in excess of 260, as it was they succumbed disappointingly and were bowled out in just 46 overs.

It can be said that the Matlock bowlers were not at their best and Eddie Lowe (3 for 26) apart, they struggled on a good batting wicket. Peter Camm (4 for 57) was the leading wicket-taker in the match and he received support from Adam Burton (1 for 34) and Mark Doyle (1 for 59), but all will agree they have, and will bowl much better than this. Pleasingly the fielding was very good with several excellent catches being taken this reducing the effectiveness of the wicket.

This season one of Matlock's strengths has been their ability to bat out for a draw when faced with possible defeat, but today there was a positive determination about the team that had a belief in themselves to pull off the win.

Following the early dismissal of Caleb Mierkalns and the bizarre exit of Mark Doyle for 13, it was a 3rd wicket stand of 97 between Kevin Leatherday and Matthew Cluer, before Cluer was out for a stylish 64, that set the home side well on the way to their target. Although two more wickets fell quickly with the score on 120, stands of 33 between Leatherday and Jonathan Stapleton (13) and 37 between Leatherday and Eddie Lowe (17 not out), kept the momentum going until needing 10 runs to win from the last over, they made it courtesy of a misfield with just 1 ball remaining.

Leatherday was superb, as he held the innings together to see his side to victory, to claim Man-of-the-Match for his 93 not out.

For the visitors Joe Kellogg (2 for 46) bowled well, Chris Windmill (1 for 32), Tom Williams (1 for 26) and Joe Ashdown (1 for 80) the other successful bowlers.

This win elevates Matlock into fifth place in the Premier League, a position they would gladly have taken before the season, but nevertheless one their performance now deserves. Next week Matlock make the long trip to Dunstall for a re-scheduled 12.30pm start.

Matlock attacks brings success
29 May, 2010

The visitors reached their total and made 216-6 with man of the match Kevin Leatherday making an unbeaten 93 to help his side to victory, supported by Matt Clewer who looked confident as he made 64 to give Matlock 22 points to SpondonÕs 7. 3 K Leatherday 2 M Clewer 1 J Ashdown.
