Dismal start in Premier Cup opener
18 April, 2010
Kimberley Institute C.C 1st XI 106 for 1

Matlock C.C 1st XI 103 all out

Matlock's Premier season opened when in a match of volcanic proportions the travelled to play a strong Kimberley team from the Notts Premier League on Sunday in the group stages of the Derbyshire Premier Cup.

Matlock won the toss and elected to bat on an excellent wicket and their final total of 103 all out was never really going to pose a threat to the home side. Only four players reached double figures and of these Peter Camm top scored with 25 whilst Caleb Mierkalns (19), Mark Doyle (17) and Jonathan Stapleton (14) were the others.

A disappointing fact was that Matlock were bowled out within 40 of their 50 over allocation which is below expectations in a Cup game, as a number of players were out to poor shot selection.

Taking nothing away from the home side bowlers who, on the day bowled tightly however, with Matt Wright (4 for 18) and Kiwi Jarrad Sewell (4 for 19) applying the stranglehold on the Matlock batsmen.

The Kimberley reply received an early setback when, with the score on only 9, Peter Camm got a good caught and bowled to remove Paldip Sidhu to inject some hope into the visitors, but it was to be short lived as in only 23 overs they cruised past the Matlock total to record a convincing 9 wicket win. Leading the way was the Nottinghamshire County player Graham White with a very good 75 not out and the other opener A.J Robinson finished on 19 not out.

Convincing as this win was for the home side, Matlock can take something from the game and in particular the bowling of Peter Camm and Australian Mark Doyle, both bowling with pace and accuracy.

Fragile as the batting was on the day, the four players reaching double figures did look good and with little help from other named batsmen in the side, the future can look rosy as Matlock now look forward to opening their league season with a visit to Quarndon next Saturday.
