1st XI back to winning ways
Saturday, 18 July, 2009

Matlock C.C 1st XI 156 for 8 (22 points)
Marehay C.C 1st XI 155 all out (6 points)

Matlock halted their recent run of poor results when they entertained a resurgent Marehay side at Causeway Lane on Saturday.

The visitors lost the toss and were asked to bat first and Matlock, without their overseas player Christoff Visser for this weekend, did a splendid job in bowling Marehay out for 155 runs in 48 overs.

Leading the way for Matlock was once again 18 year old Eddie Lander taking 3 for 45 who received excellent support from George Moulds (2 for 30), Adam Burton (2 for 32) and a special mention for Gareth Johnson who bowled his 15 overs through to finish with 2 for 42.

The Marehay run rate barely exceeded 3 runs per over at anytime and although M. Camm hung around a long time for his 48, none of the other batsmen stayed too long, the best being D. Buckley (24), T. Burke (19), T. Evans (16) and J. Kyte (15), but it was the tight Matlock bowling that was to triumph in the end.

The Matlock reply started well with a brisk 27 from Caleb Mierkalns and although they lost another wicket with the score on 37, George Moulds and Andy Rogers began to settle in before Moulds ran himself out for 17. Rogers however was batting extremely well and he went onto be the mainstay of the innings with a very welcome 62 runs. Adam Burton chipped in with 12 runs before a flurry of wickets did nothing for the nerves of the home supporters and it was left to Jonathan Stapleton to hit the winning run to see his side through to a welcome 22 points.

Marehay however never gave up, making the home side fight all the way through J. Kyte (3 for 31), T. Evans (2 for 46), D Hooley (1 for 21) and R. Wood (1 for 35).

This was a much better performance from Matlock and one that will halt the recent slide from fourth to eighth in League One, and with Visser back next week, they look forward to visiting Clay Cross on Saturday in another crucial league encounter.
