slump to defeat Swarkestone
C.C 1st XI 151 for 4 (22 points) Swarkestone must have been wary about the visit of Matlock, as in recent years they have been Swarkestone's bogey team, but it was not to be this time as another dismal batting performance by the visitors paved the way for a comfortable victory for the home side. Taking first knock Matlock's Christoff Visser was going very well until he needlessly ran himself out having scored 18, but for the rest of the top order it was the familiar procession back to the pavilion for very little and with the scoreboard reading 39 for 5 after only 12 overs it could be said that the visitors were very vulnerable. Skipper Steve Pell was still there however and together with his lower order bowlers, they began to repair the damage. Pell finished on 39 not out as he shared stands with firstly Adam Burton who batted very correctly for his 14, as did Eddie Lowe who played a mature innings of 34 to take Matlock to an improbable score of 150 for 9 at the end of 50 overs. Inflicting the damage for Swarkestone were B. Dilks (5 for 40) and M. Scott (2 for 34). The home sides reply started shakily as Visser bowled J. Guthrie and when George Moulds trapped A. LancasterÊLBW for 21 there was a glimmer of hope for Matlock. Young T. Hamilton was however batting well at number 3 and although Matlock claimed the wickets of W. White for 15 and M. Scott had his bails sent flying high by Visser, Hamilton stayed resolute to finish on 77 not out and to see his side to victory and 22 points. For Matlock Visser (2 for 34) and Adam Burton (1 for 38) bowled very well, as did George Moulds (1 for 19) but alas a poor batting display let the side down and it is something that skipper Pell must address before the nextÊleague match at home to Marehay next Saturday.
