XI Cruise to Victory Tutbury
C.C 1st XI 136 All Out (3 points) Matlock continued their good start to the season with a comfortable win at Tutbury on Saturday and this result elevates them into the top half of the league with a game in hand on most clubs. On a glorious sunny day and a very good cricket wicket, the home side were asked to bat as Steve Pell backed his quartet of bowlers to make life difficult for them. At 46 for 5 after only 15 overs it was job almost done and only stubborn resistance from S. Wesson (41) and C. Watson (27) held rampant Matlock bowlers at bay, as they stuttered to 136 all out in the 44th over. All the four bowlers used by Matlock bowled beautifully, with South African Christoff Visser taking (3 for 50), Eddie Lowe (3 for 29), Adam Burton (2 for 23) and Gareth Johnson (2 for 27), all confirming Pell's decision to ask Tutbury to bat first, to be the correct one. The Matlock reply was never really in doubt when they needed only 137 to win and with 56 overs in which to achieve it. Visser again led the way but this time with the bat, as he finished on 49 not out and with Steve Pell chipping in with 22 it was all that was needed as their cause was greatly helped by some wayward bowling resulting in no fewer than 43 extras. The only Tutbury bowlers to escape with any degree of satisfaction were R. Ellerington (1 for 13) and Darren Yeomans (1 for 18). This was a clinical performance by Matlock who now look forward to a double-header next weekend when they entertain Stainsby Hall in a league match on Saturday and a next day visit to Staveley in the Cup on Sunday.
