Reports from senior games, click on headlines Superb effort brings victory Staveley
1st XI 86 All Out Following the considerable rain that fell during the week it was perhaps fortunate that the game at Staveley was able to go ahead. To win the toss was important and the home side did exactly that as they had no intention in asking Matlock to bat first. A very good opening spell of 30 overs between Paul Spencer (3 for 32) and Aaron Daniel (2 for 38) did much to restrict the visitors batsmen and although Andy Rogers (23), Mark Burton (14) and Gareth Johnson (12) got into double figures they still found themselves at 88 for 6 wickets. With only 15 overs left it needed a determined effort to post any sort of a respectable total and fortunately for Matlock they found just the combination in skipper Steve Pell (36 not out) and Jonathan Stapleton (35 not out) and without losing any further wickets they reached a creditable yet surprising 158 for the loss of 6 wickets at the end of 50 overs. The unpredictable nature of the wicket coupled with the opening pace attack of Christoff Visser and Adam Burton was always going to be difficult for the home side who soon found themselves 2 wickets down for very little. They did rally somewhat through Chris Bullimore and Jake Vernon before Bullimore (32) lost his stumps to George Moulds and Vernon (14) was caught at the wicket off the same bowler. Staveley were then in more trouble as their Australian Aaron Daniel was bowled neck and crop by Visser, and what followed was just a procession of batsmen back to the pavilion as they were bowled out for just 86 runs. Christoff Visser bowled superbly to finish with 5 for 39 and he received excellent support from George Moulds (3 for 16), Adam Burton (1 for 24) and Gareth Johnson (1 for 2). This was a superb performance by Matlock who fully deserved their win with a workmanlike effort. .
