Scorecard on the Play-Cricket network

The early runaway league leaders Elvaston were the visitors to Causeway Lane on Saturday and on the back of four straight wins, the big question was could they make it 5?

The answer was no they could not, as in a game that proved interesting without ever becoming exciting, Matlock ground out a determined draw to deny them their 100% record.

Following the flash floods during the week, understandably the wicket was soft but this did not deter the visitors who, being put into bat got off to a good start with an opening stand of 55 between L. Archer (60) and N. Briars (36) with Briars particularly severe on anything remotely short of a length.

Elvaston's top 5 batsmen are without their strength and the run rate continued to accelerate with M.Sunderland (31), P. Birch (26) & B. Crichton (24) at the crease, but once these were dismissed the lower order collapsed to an all out of 222, well below the 275 they appeared to be aiming for earlier in their innings.

Matlock used just 4 bowlers of whom Gareth Johnson bowled extremely well to take 4 for 46 with good support coming from George Moulds (3 for 54), Christoff Visser (2 for 51) and Adam Burton (1 for 63).

The Matlock reply started brightly with a stand of 46 in just 9 overs between George Moulds (36) and Martin Leatherday (20), but against an innocuous attack the initial momentum was lost.

The consistent Andy Rogers again scored a bright 30, as did Christoff Visser (27) and Steve Pell (13) but too many wickets were sacrificed in a "soft" manor until it was left to Adam Burton & Eddie Lowe to bat out the last 2 overs to secure the draw they deserved, but will also leave them to ponder on what might have been. R. Kettlewell (4 for 38) and P. Birch (4 for 47) were the Elvaston bowlers keeping Matlock at bay and in a game were both teams would admit they could and should have played better, the 18 points to Elvaston and 9 points to Matlock was a fair reflection on the days play.
