Reports from senior games, click on headlines Much improved winning performance Matlock
C.C 1st XI 171 for 7 (22 points) Following on from their below par performance at Marehay last week, Matlock needed to display a determination vital to gaining any success in this 2009 season and they achieved this in defeating newly promoted Clay Cross at Causeway Lane on Saturday. On a wicket that favoured the bowlers Clay Cross batted first and some superb bowling by Adam Burton (5 for 34) and South African Christoff Visser (3 for 49), their top order was blown away as they reeled on 46 for 5 after 20 overs, of which C Fletcher made 24. Credit to the visitors however, their lower order dug in to rescue their side as they batted the full 50 overs in reaching 170 for 9, a total that had looked well out of reach at one stage of the game. B Hartley (43 not out), D Greaves (31) and P Lemon (16) were the revival team responsible for their improvement, whilst Gareth Johnson (1 for 18) and George Moulds bowled very tidily for Matlock in the middle of the innings. Faced with scoring 171 for victory the home side made an uncertain start in losing 2 wickets for just 35 runs, but opener George Moulds (44) was batting well and when he was joined by a confident Andy Rogers (48) together they put Matlock in the driving seat as they took the score to 111. Time now for the blood pressure pills and the nervous pacing of the pavilion balcony as 5 wickets fell for just 37 runs against the pace bowling of Sri Lankan R Subasingha (3 for 40) and the evergreen J Branson (3 for 56) but a resolute innings from skipper Steve Pell (22 not out) ably assisted by Mark Burton (14 not out) saw the home side to victory to the relief of many home supporters. A much improved performance from Matlock and one they must take to Staveley next Saturday.
